Giving Back to the Community

Supporting the community

Plowright Hinton is a long-established, family-run business with over 35 years of experience serving the local area.

Supporting the community has always been an important part of what the business stands for.

In 2014, Joanna and Julia’s mother, Christine, was diagnosed with dementia. While searching for local support, it quickly became clear that many services were oversubscribed, with long waiting lists preventing families from accessing the help they needed.

Motivated by this experience, Julia took the initiative to create a supportive and inclusive environment for others facing similar challenges. In partnership with Home Instead Welwyn & Hatfield, Christine’s care provider, the Dementia Friendly Community Café was launched in 2017.

Following Christine’s passing in 2018, the café continued in her memory—offering vital support to individuals living with dementia, as well as their families and carers. In 2025, local MP Andrew Lewin visited the café to recognise the impact of this work within the community. During the visit, it was officially announced that the café would be renamed Christine’s Community Café, honouring her legacy.

The café runs every other Tuesday and is open to anyone who would benefit from a welcoming, friendly and understanding environment.

Plowright Hinton is proud to support this initiative as its own community project. Every customer who chooses to work with the business is also contributing to meaningful local support for those who need it most.

While a number of local charities are supported, Christine’s Community Café remains at the heart of Plowright Hinton’s community commitment.
